Tesla CEO Musk breaks ground at Shanghai Gigafactory to launch China push

SHANGHAI/BEIJING (Reuters) - Tesla Inc broke ground on Monday for its Shanghai Gigafactory where it plans to begin making its Model 3 electric vehicles (EV) by year-end, a first step in localising production in the world's largest auto market.
At a ceremony at the site of the plant on the outskirts of Shanghai, Chief Executive Elon Musk joined the city's mayor and other local government officials to formally begin construction of a factory that Tesla has said will cost around $2 billion.
"We think with the resources here we can build the Shanghai Gigafactory in record time and we're looking forward to hopefully having some initial production of the Model 3 towards the end of this year and achieving volume production next year," Musk said at the event.
The so-called Gigafactory is China's first wholly foreign-owned car plant, a reflection of China's broader shift to open up its car market, even amid a trade war with the United States which has seen a rise in tariffs on cars imported from the U.S.
Producing cars locally is likely to help Tesla minimise the impact of the trade war, which has forced the EV maker to adjust prices of its U.S.-made cars in China. Keeping prices in check will also help Tesla fend off competition from a swathe of domestic EV startups such as Nio Inc, Byton and XPeng Motors.
"Affordable cars must be made on same continent as customers," Musk wrote on Twitter ahead of the event.

American cars are everywhere in China, but what cars are they everywhere in America?
US lost tech again
Broke ground today and factory will be finished by summer that's only China can do !!!
Another big loss for Americans.
Recently I heard Trump saying that lots of great US facturies where coming back and bringing millions of new jobs.......Does it means that Tesla is not part of that package of beautifull and great US companies coming back home? Or is it only happen in Trump´s head?
Pretty soon you will be able to buy a car called a Toosla in China. It will be able to utilize all of Tesla's parts, and cost 1/3rd as much :)
These well known low priced Tesla EVs will sell like hotcakes in China. Their population is just starving for a cheapo brand.
They’ll let him make a few cars then steal the technology and make their own version. Happens all the time.
Disappointing to see Musk make such a big mistake.
He will learn a very costly and painful lesson from this blunder.
In the end, a Chinese company will get his market, his IP and his factories.
Here is another example of US company building factory in China. this type of doing business in China is a high risk since they are just handing over their techs to China and in a few years
I disagree with Musk on this one. China is only in it to steal the technology and know how. Once achieved, Tesla will be forced out.

Gone. More American jobs.
If Ford, Chevy and other automakers do not act now Tesla will be the largest car maker in the world within 10 years. One can only hope! Go Tesla!!
Musk is working for the Chinese now.

A $2 Billion factory on the east side of the USA would have been nicer.
Sooner or later, Tesla will ship cars made in China back to USA.
